The supply market grew quickly, and faster than the standards holding it together. A lot of new sellers appeared over a short period. Some were serious operations with real analytical relationships behind them. Others were resellers with a website, a stock photograph of a laboratory they had never visited, and a purity figure copied from an upstream supplier they had never audited, never spoken to, and in some cases could not have named if asked.

From the outside, the two were almost indistinguishable. Same claims, similar pricing, the same confident vocabulary about quality and rigour. Both had a page much like this one, asserting a commitment to excellence in more or less identical language. A researcher comparing two suppliers on their websites was, in practice, comparing two pieces of copywriting.

The difference only surfaced later, and it surfaced expensively. In a batch that behaved differently from the last batch of the supposedly identical compound. In a Certificate of Analysis that could not be traced to an actual test on actual material no batch number, no laboratory named, no method disclosed, no date. In an order that sat in a customs facility for six weeks while the supplier's support address bounced. In a study that produced a clean, plausible, entirely wrong result, and nobody realised why until much later, if at all.

Why Purity Is Not a Marketing Number

A purity figure is usually treated as a badge — a number printed on a product page to signal seriousness. In practice it is nothing of the sort. It is a variable inside the researcher's experiment, and it operates there whether the researcher accounts for it or not.

Suppose a compound is 92% pure rather than the 99% stated on the label. The missing 8% is not empty space and it is not inert filler. It is something, and what it is depends on how the peptide was made, and how carefully.

In solid-phase synthesis, each amino acid is added in sequence, and each coupling step has an efficiency below 100%. The chains where a coupling failed do not vanish — they carry on through the remaining cycles as deletion sequences, missing one residue, otherwise near-identical to the target. Chains where synthesis terminated early become truncated sequences. Beyond those, the crude product can carry residual solvents, scavengers and reagents from the cleavage step, counter-ions, moisture, and aggregated or misfolded material that never adopted the correct conformation.

Some of these contaminants are inert and simply dilute the material. Some are not. Deletion and truncation sequences are the particular problem, and the reason is precisely their similarity to the target: close enough in structure to interfere with the same systems, different enough to behave in ways the target's own behaviour does not predict. They are, in effect, a second uncharacterised compound present at unknown concentration.

The consequence is a study measuring something other than what it believes it is measuring. And here is what makes that dangerous rather than merely wasteful: the error is invisible. No anomaly. No obvious failure. No error bar that blows out. Nothing signalling that anything has gone wrong. There is simply a result — clean, plausible, internally consistent and wrong. It gets recorded, analysed, written up, and sometimes built upon.

The second problem is consistency, and it gets the least attention relative to the damage it does. We state this openly rather than folding those compounds under a blanket 99% claim and hoping nobody looks closely. Synthesis chemistry does not accommodate marketing consistency. Longer sequences require more coupling steps, and every additional step is another opportunity for a small failure that compounds through the remaining chain. Aggregation-prone sequences resist efficient coupling. Modified and cyclised peptides require further chemistry after assembly, each stage introducing its own potential for by-products.

A supplier claiming an identical purity ceiling across every compound in a broad catalogue is making a claim that anyone with a working knowledge of peptide chemistry can see through immediately. We would rather be accurate and trusted than uniform and doubted.

Testing and Third-Party Verification

Every batch is tested. Not a representative batch. Not the first of a production run, with the rest assumed to match. Not periodic spot-checks on a rolling schedule. Every batch. Testing is carried out by independent third-party laboratories with no commercial stake in the result.

This is not a formality, and it is not interchangeable with in-house quality control, however good that in-house capability may be. A supplier that tests its own material and issues its own certificate is grading its own homework. Nothing structurally prevents it from grading generously, and there is a constant, quiet commercial pressure encouraging exactly that. An undated certificate, with no batch number, no laboratory identified and no method described, tells the researcher exactly this — that a test was performed on something, somewhere, at some point, by someone. That is not evidence. It is the shape of evidence with the content removed.

If an institutional review process asks for supporting documentation, the document holds up when it is examined — the only test of a certificate that actually matters. No researcher should be placed in the position of defending their supplier's paperwork.

Stability and Handling

Purity at the point of synthesis means nothing whatsoever if the material degrades before it reaches the bench. This is the half of the quality equation that suppliers most often ignore, because it happens after the sale and outside the laboratory, where nobody is watching.

Peptides are sensitive materials — to heat, which accelerates hydrolysis and oxidation; to moisture, which enables both; to light, where photosensitive residues are present; to oxidation at exposed residues; and to repeated freeze-thaw cycling, which promotes aggregation. A compound that leaves a facility at 99% and arrives having passed through a heated warehouse, an uninsulated transit leg and a week on a depot shelf is, for practical purposes, compromised — and its Certificate of Analysis now describes a material that no longer exists.

Lyophilisation, correct storage, appropriate packaging and transit arrangements suited to the compound are therefore not logistics details to be optimised for cost. They are the second half of the purity commitment, and a supplier that takes the first half seriously while treating the second as a shipping expense has not understood the problem it is solving. We treat them as one continuous obligation, running from synthesis to the researcher's freezer.

Storage, Handling and Packaging

Orders are stored under conditions appropriate to the compound, and prepared for transit on the assumption that transit will be imperfect — because, over enough shipments, it always is.
